3rd Grade Learning Extensions

In Third Grade, we are reading and discussing our novel Skinnybones in class.  In class on 12/10, we will participate in the Hour of Code by creating a Christmas Card on Scratch.  I think they should have a lot of fun learning to do computer programming.

At home this week, I would like for students to work on Khan Academy to reach their goal of 50% mastery of 3rd grade goals by Christmas break.  Students who reach this goal by Wednesday 12/17 will get to eat lunch in the classroom with me and play games.

Currently, we have one student who has reached this goal and three who are really close.  If students get on Khan academy for 15-20 minutes each day, they should be able to reach this goal.

If you would like to know how close your child is to reaching their goal, feel free to contact Mrs. Pogue.

The T-shirts were super!  The children were so excited to share their creativity and hard work.  I appreciate each family for working with their child to learn about the research process.

1st and 2nd Grade Week of 12/8 and 12/15

Just a reminder our GT Field Trip will be on Tuesday 12/9.  Please be sure your child arrives at school on time and is dressed appropriately for the weather.  Unless your child is getting a lunch at school, they will need to bring a sack lunch.  I do prefer sack lunches instead of lunch boxes so we can just throw away what isn't eaten.

If you are chaperoning, you will receive information about your groups, on Monday.

This week, we talked about holiday traditions in North America.  Of course we are most familiar with the customs of the U.S.A.  Over the next week, I'd like you and your family to learn of a custom from Canada in Mexico that might be different from ours here in the U.S.A.

Here are a couple of links that might help you out:

Christmas in Mexico

Please have your child write about their two facts in their GT journals and bring to class on Thursday, December 11th.

Don't forget about the latest Khan Academy Challenge:

Lunch in the Classroom Challenge.  Students who reach the following goals on Khan Academy will get to eat lunch in the classroom and play games the week before Christmas Break.
    1. First Grade - 50% of the Early Math Mission - 2 students have reached this goal and 2 are getting close!  Try 10-15 minutes each day to reach your goal!
    2. Second Grade - 70% of the Early Math Mission - 4 students have reached this goal and 4 are getting close.  Just a few minutes each day will get you there!
Have fun and I'm looking forward to our field trip!

4th Grade Christmas In-Class Project

Good afternoon!

What a whirlwind of a week!  Coming back from a holiday and then having a sick kid!  We did have a great class today!  Next week, fourth grade GT will meet on Thursday as I will be out on the 1st and 2nd Grade GT field trip on Tuesday.  We will begin our Christmas Card Project and participate in Hour of Code.  Below you will find the information about the Christmas Card Project.  Please don't forget to bring your items!

You'll also want to continue working on Khan Academy at home.  Remember your goal is 50% mastery to eat lunch in the classroom the last week before Christmas break.  So far one person has reached that goal and a few are following close behind.

As usual, please fee free to ask if you have any questions.

Next week in GT class, we are going to do a special Christmas card project.  In order to make your Christmas card more personal, I will need you to bring in some items from home.  You will need to bring 6 - 10 items that tell about you, your likes, your dislikes, your hobbies, your accomplishments, your family, etc.

For example, for myself I could bring:
  • A picture of my family
  • My Coca Cola Christmas ornament to show where I went on vacation this year
  • A book because I love to read
  • One of my willow tree angels because I collect them
  • My grandmother’s Christmas ornament because I like to decorate like she did
  • A baseball because my family and I visit baseball stadiums around the country

The items you bring will need to fit in a box or bag that you can carry on your own - so they don’t need to be very big or very heavy.  Also, I wouldn’t bring anything too valuable.  If you like to play video games, I would just bring the video case or the video game controller.
It will be fun – so don’t forget!!

4th Grade Family College Presentations

What a fantastic day of learning all about what these wonderful children hope to be when they grow up!  I hope they learned from the process and from each other.  I was most pleasantly surprised with how many out of state colleges were researched!  These kids can aspire to do anything they want as long as they work hard.

Below is a padlet showing the research topics from each student and some links to presentations and/or videos.  I've also included some pictures of the students presenting.

Fourth Grade Goal Setting - due Tuesday 11/11

Your main assignment at home this week is to work on your college research project.  By next week, you should be at least halfway complete if you are practicing Habit 1:  Being Proactive and using your time wisely.  Remember if you have any questions, please be sure to ask.

As you work on your college research project, I would like for you to also think about Habit 2:  Begin With the End in Mind - having a plan, goal setting.  In your GT journal, I would like for you to write two goals this week . . . .
  1. A Reading Goal
  2. A Math Goal
I would like your reading goal to be centered around how much time you plan to read each week during the month of January.  Remember, I recommended a minimum of 100 minutes of outside of school reading each week.  Make a plan for how you will get your reading done.  Sometimes my children get their reading done by reading in the car on the way to events.

For your math goal, I would like for you to think about your last unit assessment and ask yourself, what is my goal for my next test?  Is your goal to pass the test this time?  Is your goal to get two more questions right on this next one?  Is your goal to score a 90 or above for advanced performance?  Once you have your goal in mind, make a plan for reaching your goal.  Will you draw a strip diagram for each problem to help you determine the operation and steps?  Will you double check your computation?  Will you put stars by the hard questions and go back to recheck them?  Will you use grid paper so that all of your numbers are lined up?

To sum up your learning extensions this week:
  • Work on your family college research project
  • Write a reading goal
  • Write a math goal
Optional Challenges:
  • Complete at least three recommended lessons on Khan Academy
  • Complete at least three mastery challenges on Khan Academy
  • There could be surprises if you work extra hard.  Who will be the next 4th grader to master 50% of the 4th grade math skills?
Have a great learning week!

Sharing More Student Work

Check out our second grade chatterpix videos.  They shared information about a famous landmark in Europe!  Enjoy!

Storybook Character Day at Scott Elementary School

What a fun, fun day at school!  We had our first Storybook Character Day.  We encouraged our students to dress up as their favorite storybook character and bring the book with them.  The teachers dressed up, the office staff dressed up, our central administration staff came over in costume, and even our custodian and cafeteria workers dressed up!  The morning began with a storybook character parade.  Throughout the day select students have been awarded free books by random raffle drawings and we have mystery readers coming to read a book to each grade level. The classrooms are full of engaging activities involving the books the students brought to school.  Super fun!  I thought you all might enjoy some pictures of this exciting day at school.

In the Fourth grade pod, we dressed up as the Herdmans, the notorious and mischievous characters from Barbara Robinson's books, The Best School Year Ever, The Best Halloween Ever, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.  I'm the youngest sister, Gladys, wearing my sign that says "Beware of Gladys" because I bite - teehee!

Fourth Grade students listening to Mr. Worthy, our superintendent read Duck for President.  He was their mystery reader.

It's College & Career Research Time

Each grade level received a copy of the family college research project.  These projects are due in GT class the week of November 17th on your child's GT class day.   This is a family projects designed to give you and your child the opportunity to discuss their future plans.  Below is a link to each grade level's project.
