Alright ladies and gentlemen, let's work hard this week!  I believe that you can!

  • Assignment #1 choose your question to research during Genius Hour.  Remember to talk over your topic with your parents.  Please write your topic in your journal and have your parents sign it.  Here is a link to our document with our ideas.  OUR IDEAS  Don't forget that not all of the ideas were good ones.  You want to have a PASSION for your topic and for it to be a topic on which you can find information.  I would not recommend researching a college as our college projects will be assigned soon.
  • Watch the following video on multiplication with partial product multiplication, also known as the area model), then solve the recommended multiplication lesson on your Khan Academy.
Multiplying: using an area model: Using graph paper we'll map out an area model to help us with a multiplication problem.

  • I will be rewarding those students who get their homework done including journal writing and 30 minutes on Khan Academy.

  • Khan Academy Challenge:  Who can earn the most points this week?  Will it be you?
  • Comment below:  Tell me one thing you worked hard on this week.

It Ain't Easy and Don't Let Them Think It Is!!

So tonight I am attempting my first blog post, as a teacher blogger, not as a homework assigner.  This post is for parents; of course kids can read it as well and probably should.  Practice and effort?  How often does your GT kid like to practice?  How often does your GT child REALLY put forth effort?  If your experience at home is anything like what I witness in class, then my guess is not very often.  UNLESS, however, they have a GAME DAY coming up, perhaps a big sporting event or recital, or even a visit to grandma's where they get to show off . . . THEN they practice and put forth effort so they can SHINE!!

Today as I reviewed the amount of minutes my 4th graders spent on Khan Academy this week, I realized that my whole "BE PROACTIVE" campaign and take responsibility for your homework is ummm, well not going very well.  I thought it was a grand idea, encouraging the kids to be responsible for their own work and not forcing them, but when not even one third of the class reached my recommended time, I had to question why.

Through observation, I found the answer.  I asked those that didn't work at home to do Khan Academy in class and all of a sudden, I got - "But, it's haaarrrdd,  Can I skip this lesson and do an easier one?"  HUH?? Doing HARD work, learning something new, working through the frustration of not "knowing EVERYTHING - THESE things grow dendrites!  These PRACTICES help you grow and learn!  As an educator, I want my students to work through HARD stuff - that is the goal of school!

So parents, I ask for your help here.  PLEASE encourage your child to PRACTICE and put forth EFFORT!  Our speaker tonight from the Mensa society reiterated the importance of helping our GT kids understand the role of practice and effort in life.  Her points hit home with me, especially after today's experience with kids not wanting to do the HARD stuff.

According to researcher Anders Ericsson, we need to help our children (you know yours belong to me too), understand the role of deliberate practice.  Here a few key points from the section from tonight's presentation on practice:

  • Help your child get motivated to improve at necessary tasks that they don't enjoy (like difficult math or writing)
  • Encourage them to perform the same or similar tasks in order to improve at something
  • Ask them to try the same thing in different ways (such as different ways to solve the same problem, or different ways to write the same sentence)
  • And here is a big one:  Our kids MUST learn that they cannot expect to enjoy PRACTICE all of the time.  In other words, I don't want them to work on Khan Academy because it is fun, I want them to work on Khan Academy because it helps them learn different ways to master their grade level math concepts.
So, I encourage you all to help your children set a goal this week for practicing so that the new concepts become familiar concepts.  Only through practice, will your child become a better reader, writer, mathematician, speller, basketball player, chess player etc.  How many minutes will your child practice this week on something that doesn't come easy to them?

1st and 2nd Grade Homework

1st Grade due Thursday 10/2; 2nd Grade due Wednesday 10/1

Can you solve the following problem?  Draw it out and bring your answer to class.

There are three square boxes of equal size.  In each box, there are two smaller boxes.  How many boxes are there all together?

I can't wait to see your solutions.

Don't forget to e proactive this week and work on Khan Academy.  I have written your user name on the inside cover of your journal.  Can you challenge yourself do at least 30 minutes?

Think of a way you can help someone this week by being proactive.

We will be exploring more about journal writing in our journals in class.

Have a great week and see if you can learn something new!

3rd Grade Homework due Wednesday, October 1st.

Watch the following video.  After watching the video and gaining an understanding of multiplication, make a list in your journal of all the ways multiplication can be used in your daily life.  We will share our journals in class.  Stretch to find as many ideas as you can.  It's ok to ask for help.

Intro to multiplication:

Remember, you can earn extra workles for writing in your journal and spending 30 minutes on Khan Academy each week.  I have been recommending lessons based on what your teachers are teaching in math.

Enjoy your work!

4th Grade Home Investigations Due 9/30

After reviewing the math assessments this week, I noticed that many of you are still having a little trouble with profit word problems in math.  For homework, I would like for you to write a word problem about profit.  Talk to your parents and get help if needed.  I would like for the problem to take two steps to solve and involve decimal numbers if possible.  Let's see how much you can stretch your brain.  Be sure to read the entire blog, there are some requests at the bottom of the blog as well.

Remember to try and write in your journal at least once this week and visit Khan Academy for at least 30 minutes.

Have a fabulous week and see how much you can learn!
